Coconut Milk, Also for Beauty Products

Bowl of coconut milk

Coconut oil is all the rage today, conquering not just the world of nutrition and gastronomy, but also of beauty and cosmetics. However, as you probably already know, the oil is not the be-all and end-all of growing this very useful palm.

In many areas around Asia, the coconut tree represents significant economic value, with people being able to find use for just about every part of it. The trunk is often used as building lumber, the coir fibers from the fruit’s husk can be used to make ropes and mats, and the midrib of the fronds are often collected to make brooms. The coconut fruit, from which the oil is yielded, is also the source of coconut water and coconut milk.

In this article, we’d like to focus on coconut milk. Being mostly used as a base for curry sauce, soups, smoothies, and similar food products, coconut milk is not really thought of by most people as something that can be used to enhance one’s beauty, or as an ingredient in skincare products. However, aside from being a staple for creating many of our culinary favorites, coconut milk also offers exciting benefits for those who want to jazz up their beauty regimen.

But first, what exactly is coconut milk?

The concentrated, high fat level extract obtained from the fresh meat of a mature, brown coconut is often referred to as coconut cream. Concentrated coconut cream can be diluted, usually by adding water, to produce the more familiar coconut milk. Coconut milk can be in various levels of fat, depending on the intended use and extent of dilution.  Coconut milk used for beverages is often at around 2-5% fat level, while that used as culinary ingredient is at around 14-17% fat level. Beauty products for hair and skin use either coconut cream, if they want a concentrated ingredient, or coconut milk for a diluted version.

Enjoying the health and beauty benefits of coconut milk

The consumption of coconut milk can improve a person’s physical health and well-being, which can then translate to secondary beauty benefits. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes, as well as short-chain and medium-chain fatty acids that are easily used by the body as energy instead of being accumulated as fat. It has also been shown to be helpful in strengthening the immune system.

There are also some beauty products in the market today that incorporate coconut milk as one of their main ingredients. Whether the product is shampoo, skin moisturizer, or soap, coconut milk is used by manufacturers for its numerous cosmetic benefits. However, you can also consider creating homemade versions that blend fresh coconut milk with other wholesome natural ingredients. Some of our suggestions are outlined below.

Coconut milk as body wash

First up, try creating your own homemade body wash. Coconut milk can be combined with liquid castile soap to create a refreshing body wash that is not only natural but also effective at cleansing and moisturizing your skin.

Coconut milk as skin moisturizer

Sun exposure and dry, cold air can make your skin lose moisture and appear less supple. Moisturize it with coconut milk mixed with honey, argan oil, and olive oil. Leave the blend on your skin for a few minutes before rinsing it off with water and patting yourself dry.

Coconut milk as body scrub

One great way to lift old, tired skin cells is to use a body scrub. You can make one by combining coconut milk, sugar, salt, and your choice of oil. To make your own scrub, simply mix ½ cup of coconut milk and ½ cup of combined sugar and natural sea salt. Add virgin coconut oil or olive oil until the mixture achieves a texture that suits you. While you’re in the shower, massage the blend onto your skin then rinse off afterwards.

Coconut milk as make-up remover

A simple mixture of equal parts olive oil and coconut milk can help remove make-up without the drying effects of alcohol-based products. Massage it onto your face, rinse, and towel off afterwards.

Coconut milk as facial cleanser

Your face can become lackluster due to tiredness and exposure to the elements. Rejuvenate it with a homemade facial cleanser made with coconut milk, yogurt, oatmeal, and finely ground almond nuts. Mix the ingredients together and then massage it onto your face to cleanse and exfoliate your skin. Leave it on for about 5 minutes before rinsing. Enjoy the renewed glow that your face will have after receiving a blast of nutrients and moisture.

Coconut milk is one of those beauty secrets that can really bring your skincare routine to a new level. Try it today, and see the difference for yourself.
